Answer
Where do Upwork jobs come from, and which countries' clients actually hire?
Published August 17, 2026 · Freelancing Stats
No, Upwork is not dead. The data describes an uneven marketplace, not a dying one. The honest version of the question splits in two: where the work is posted from, and whether the clients posting it go on to hire anyone. Our tracking answers both directly.
United States clients posted 43.2% of the 108,197 jobs published in the trailing 28 days.
Postings from United States clients end in a hire 47.8% of the time once resolved; postings from India clients 27.1% of the time. That is a 20.7 percentage-point gap on the same marketplace.
Which countries' clients actually hire
Where Upwork jobs come from
The country a job is posted from is visible on every posting before a single connect is spent. That makes this split practical rather than trivia: it prices the invisible bet every proposal rides on, the bet that this client hires anyone at all. Posting volume tells you where the demand is; the hire rate tells you what that demand is worth.
| Client country | Share of postings | Postings |
|---|---|---|
| United States | 43.2% | 46,762 |
| United Kingdom | 7.6% | 8,175 |
| India | 6.1% | 6,653 |
| Australia | 6.0% | 6,531 |
| Canada | 4.9% | 5,334 |
| Pakistan | 2.7% | 2,938 |
So is Upwork dead?
No. Jobs keep arriving every day, and resolved postings keep ending in hires at rates that differ sharply by who is posting them. What reads as a dead platform from one country can read as a working market from another. The practical question is not whether the platform is alive, but whether the clients you can reach are the kind that hire.
